Overview

This page complements information found on faculty webpage on the Specialization Visual Computing in the Bachelor Program Informatics. Please see there for general details on this specialization. This page focuses on the differences to the previous program.

From WS 2023, the Bachelor Media Informatics and Visual Computing (here BMI)  has been replaced by the general Bachelor Informatics (here BI). lnstead of choosing between 3 specialized Bachelor programs, students can now choose one of several "specializations" (Vertiefung) in BI, one of which is Visual Computing.

The modules and many lectures have changed significantly between BMI and BI. In order to ease the transition, a special curriculum for BMI has been introduced for WS 2022 and SS 2023 (here: BMI22). BMI22 contains mostly the new modules found in BI. This allows students who started BMI up to SS 2023 to finish it, while the faculty does not have to offer the old courses anymore from WS 2023. More information on how the old lectures map to the new ones can be found below.

Structure of Specialization Visual Computing

In order to obtain the Visual Computing specialization (Vertiefung), you have to complete 7 modules, 2 from the core electives and 5 from the electives. In your selection of 7 out of 10 core electives, you have to choose:

  • Software Engineering
  • Introduction to Visual Computing

From the other electives, you have to choose the following 5 modules:

  • Foundations of Computer Graphics (Grundlagen der Computergraphik)
  • Foundations of Computer Vision (Grundlagen der Computer Vision)
  • Multimedia
  • Programming Techniques for Visual Computing
  • Visualization

These 5 modules are offered from WS 2023 at our institute. It is recommended to do the courses in the following semester structure:

2. Semester Einführung in Visual Computing
3. Semester Software Engineering
Grundlagen der Computergraphik
4. Semester Programmiertechniken für Visual Computing
Visualisierung
+12 ECTS enge, erweiterte Wahl, Freifächer
5. Semester Grundlagen der Computer Vision
+21 ECTS enge, erweiterte Wahl, Freifächer
6. Semester Multimedia
+14 ECTS enge, erweiterte Wahl, Freifächer

Information for Students of Bachelor Media Informatics and Visual Computing (BMI)

If you started in WS 2022 or SS 2023, you already get all the new lectures through BMI22 (see above). If you started earlier, you will have done some of the old lectures.

While the structure of the new program looks quite different from the previous one, the actual content is quite similar, at least for Visual Computing. The rationale behind the structure is to have larger lectures (min 6.0 ECTS) which integrate practical and theoretical parts (i.e., UE + VO usually becomes VU). This was a requirement for most of the new Bachelor curriculum.

In the following table, you can see what old lectures correspond to new lectures. Lectures on the left-hand side are equivalent to lectures on the right-hand side when you finish your studies. As usual, if there are more ECTS on the left-hand side than on the right-hand side, these count as "Wahlfach". Note also that in two cases, there will be a winter term (WS)/summer term (SS) change.

Old lecture (BMI before 2022) New lecture (BMI22 or BI)
Einführung in Visual Computing VU 6.0 no change
Einführung in die Computergraphik UE 3.0 (WS)+
Computergraphik VO 3.0 (SS)
(*) Grundlagen der Computergraphik VU 6.0 (WS)
Computergraphik UE 6.0 Programmiertechniken für Visual Computing PR 6.0
Informationsdesign & Visualisierung  VU 3.0 (SS) +
Visualisierung 1 (WS)
Visualisierung VU 6.0 (SS)
Multimedia VO 3.0 + UE 4.0 Multimedia VU 6.0
Einführung in die digitale Bildverarbeitung UE 3.0 +
Einführung in die Mustererkennung VO 3.0 + UE 3.0
(+) Grundlagen der Computer Vision VU 6.0

(+) Note that "Grundlagen der Computer Vision" is a completely new lecture, and will probably not contain a lot of content from the previous lectures. The equivalence is listed for "Anrechnung" only.

(*) The situation with "Grundlagen der Computergraphik" is different: the content really is mostly the previous UE Einführung in die Computergraphik, and parts of the VO Computergraphik, with some adaptations. If you have done one of the two, you can still do the other within the new lecture (see FAQ).

FAQ

I already did Computergraphik VO, what do I do?

You can do just the lab part of Grundlagen der Computergraphik VU, and will get a grade for Einführung in Computergraphik UE with "Stoffsemester" before WS 2023.
