ImplementationIn order to validate the assumptions made in our proposal, we are in the process of extending the public domain TIFF library by Sam Leffler of Silicon Graphics Inc. to meet our specifications. Once the code is completed and stable we will contact the author for experimental inclusion of the new features (in the spirit of the experimental inclusion of Greg Ward-Larson's logLuv format) into the library and Adobe for allocation of definite tags for the extensions (we use locally assigned temporary values in the meantime).ProgressSo far our modification of the library can only read and write uncompressed spectral images with 4-byte floating point coefficients, and is hence to be considered an early prototype. We do not expect this version of the format to be used in practice, but it is a good milestone for incremental implementation. We expect this stituation to improve very soon, especially since we need a readily usable spectral image format with some amount of compression and efficiency for our related rendering research work at the institute (i.e. the customers are waiting locally :-).
