Since the innovation of the digital camera the number of pictures taken is still increasing. Especially in recent years, when mobile phone manufacturer began to attach digital cameras to their mobile phones, this ended up in a flood of pictures nowadays. This paper reviews the state of the art in automatic summarization of image datasets i.e., methods that are capable to filter the relevant images out of this huge amount of images and arrange them according to some rules to get a nice overview image for a particular image dataset. Furthermore this paper will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the different presented approaches.
