In this proposal talk, we will introduce a specialized data structure for appearance modeling. Over the years, attempts were made to generalize surface scattering models (BSDFs).
However, to our knowledge, there is still no universal material representation that standardizes BSDFs [Guarnera et al.(2016)]. Our overarching objective in this project is to unify various material representations. Alongside, we believe that a unified approach to BSDFs will simplify the use of data-driven reflectance models.
Our initial experiments in this regard suggest that the proposed data structure is not only flexible enough to represent measured reflectance data, but it is also simple to use. Furthermore, our new framework provides exceptional compression of the underlying data that current measured BSDF models struggle to achieve.
