Research Work

  • Virtual Reality Human Interfaces & Interaction Metaphors

  • My PhD work investigates the essential basics of the human-machine interaction when someone enters the virtual environment. Together with Michael Gervautz we developed a two-handed interface for Augmented Reality Applications - the Personal Interaction Panel (PIP). It is a new interaction paradigm that uses a simple hardware set-up to enable natural and easy-to-learn control over 3D applications.

Our research interests focus on an Augmented Reality System called "Studierstube" which enhances collaboration of multiple users in an synthetically augmented set-up.

The virtual environment group is working on a number of other very interesting projects!

We are always keeping in mind, that in the end our research work has to focus on some real world applications, so to get a feeling of the problem, I trained myself in a field study :)))
Ikarus got difficulties in the real world, I tried it in the virtual world!

You believe, that this makes sick!

  • Natural atmospheric light phenomena

  • In cooperation with my advisor Michael Gervautz I implemented a complete volume rendering algorithm into the web-known Persistence of Vision raytracer. We are able to trace turbulent clouds, glows, explosions, fire and such phenomena as lit dust, haze or murky fog. For results check out my Halo page.

  • Holography

  • I attended summer 1993 the Best Summer Source on Holography in Lund/Sweden. Since then I'm found of holographic imaging and up-to-date holographic research.

This brought me the idea to present the Basics of Holography at the 6th Internal Workshop of the Institute of Computer Graphics on 18th Dec 1995! Now You can attend the presentation via WWW! Have Fun!
