Within a quite short time the World Wide Web (WWW) [1] has shown that it can provide a function that was lacking. It added a dimension to the Internet.
HTML[2] is the language that is used to drive the WWW, it enables the author to provide Information to the whole net-community on a global scale. It also introduced a way to distribute data across the net, this was already being done with the Gopher[3] and WAIS[4] services but using the WWW and its accompanying browsers made accessing information much easier.
Also with HTML information could be provided in a more structured and organized way than was possible with the other services, especially the possibility to incorporate different medias into one document made the web what it is today.
