This page is still under construction! It is based upon various requests of students from abroad and just reflects the personal opinion of two former ERASMUS students (in Newcastle upon Tyne / GB), now back home to Vienna.

Is the University far from the centre of Vienna?
The Vienna University of Technology is in 15 minutes walking distance from the centre ( St. Stephen's Cathedral), just down the famous "Kärtner Straße".
Is there a good transport network?
We have five metro lines (U1, U2, U3, U4 and U6), which interlink the most important locations in Vienna. Additionally there is an extensive network of local trains, buses and trams.
If you need more detailed informations about the public transport network in Vienna, eg. how to get from "Stephansplatz" to "Westbahnhof" just visit the homepage of the " Wiener Linien" (in German)!
And not to forget the traditional way of travelling around in the centre of Vienna: The famous "Fiaker", a two-horse carriage which is especially esteemed by tourists ... :-)
Is there an airport nearby or at some distance?
The airport is located in Wien-Schwechat which is a Southern suburb of Vienna. There are excellent public transport connections (busses and local trains) and also special taxis to the airport.
According to the railway-timetable it should take you 31 minutes to get from "Flughafen Wien-Schwechat" (airport) to "Wien-Mitte" (centre) using line S7.
Does the University have many student residences on campus or do students prefer to live away from the campus?
There is no campus around the universities in Vienna, we have several student accommodations spread out all over the city instead. Your local ERASMUS coordinator at your home university will give you the contact-address of the ERASMUS coordinator at your destination university in Vienna, who should be able to help you with finding a suitable accommodation.
A cheaper solution to afford your living is to share a flat with others in a so called "Wohngemeinschaft", in short "WG". The usual way is to accept the place provided by the participating ERASMUS departments and to look for such a WG once you are in Vienna, if you prefer.
How expensive is student accommodation?
The usual rents for student homes are between 1500 Austrian Shillings per month (for small double rooms) and 4000 Austrian Shillings (for little flats with single room and shared kitchen in good location).
If you share a flat with others you may have greater comfort, your own room at a cheaper rent and the additional flexibility in being able to decide with whom you wish to share a flat.
Is student accommodation fairly easy to obtain during the summer?
If you need accommodation just during the holidays (February or July to September) it's really easy to get one, because many students are at home and their rooms in Vienna are vacant. During the semesters however applications should be made early (about one semester in advance if possible) to obtain suitable accommodation.
How about the cost of living in Vienna compared to other European cities esp. Newcastle?
Are there suitable student places to eat out or buy food eg. a university refectory or local eateries (as they say)?
There is a refectory, the so called Mensa or if you search for a possibility to eat somewhere else look at Eating and Drinking in Vienna (German!).
Are there any large supermarkets that are cheap?
The answers will be published soon!
