title = "Towards a virtual environment for interactive world building",
author = "Dieter Schmalstieg and Michael Gervautz",
year = "1995",
abstract = "We propose an architecture for virtual environments that is
aimed at the construction of a continuous global information
space. Persistent simulation engines with freely
programmable content are the key to achieve this goal. Our
approach is based on a hybrid client-server/peer-to-peer
network: simulation data is maintained on a server that is
responsible for a region of the virtual environment. The
server exchanges information with neighboring servers, and
allows users to participate in the environment through
clients. The database is composed of object-oriented
autonomous actors that communicate with each other by
message passing.",
