Description

Seismic measurements and visualization are the basis for efficient exploration and prospection of oil and gas reservoirs. As a part of geophysics, it provides the starting point for the graphical representation of the composition of the earth crust. Therefore, it is used to facilitate the retrieval of oil and gas reserves. This is done by generating man-made ground vibrations and measuring the sound waves that are reflected from different soil layers with geophones. The geophones, which are arranged in a 2D grid of measuring points, record the delay and amplitude of the sound waves. The measuring points have a horizontal expansion over many kilometer (at a distance of 10-100m), which together with thousands of measured values along the depth axis, adds up in a regular (rectilinear) 3D volume ("Seismic Cube") of several gigabyte of data. The main goal of this project is the exploration and implementation of a new, efficient and interactive workflow for the depth conversion and interpretation of seismic data. High-Quality Volume Rendering has to be integrated in this workflow to realize the 3D visualization process.

Task

This project is a co-operation of VRVis, HOL (Heinemann Oil GmbH) and SimVis GmbH and therefore offers the possibility to contribute in a very interesting industrial research project. We offer different tasks suitable for the duration of your internship (student project, diploma thesis...) and depending on your interests. If you are interested, just contact us and we will find an interesting topic for you.

Requirements

Basic knowledge in computer graphics and visualization, C++ programming, experience with OpenGL and vertex/fragment programs is advantageous.
